"Your Family Story transformed into Music"

Finally, CC Korea announces 2012 CC Art Happening Concert. This is the second time to have Art Happening.

Unlike the first time, which we assembled series of exhibitions and a concert together into one name under Art

Happening, we only have a small but delightful concert this time. It is held on May 26, 2012 in Jungdok Library,

Seoul.

We've collected stories of families from public. http://ccarth.net The composers who have been participating

in this project since last Art Happening continuously joined this time again, selected what stories they are in-

terested in, and made music out of them. Each music is going to be performed in the concert for the families

of the stories. We welcome everyone to this enjoyable music experience in the middle of Spring in Seoul.

All the music will be distributed under Creative Commons Licenses, conditions might vary up to the original com-

posers.

CC Korea releases as open source

CC Korea releases CCL-ed content search service <Let's CC> (http://letscc.net) as open source under GPLv3.

<Let's CC> helps finding contents under CCL such as images, video clips, music files or documents by utilizing open API from content providers such as Flickr and Youtube.

You can set your needs from the main page when you start search, and the service automatically selects the condition that meets your requirements.

<Let's CC> has been popular among Korean users who look for CCL contents, but we also received a lot of support from international users for its simple user interface. This release as open source is also a response to requests from foreign fans of <Let's CC>. Thank you very much for your interest, world!

The Power of OPEN is a book about success stories that of who believed in the value of sharing, and

cases that applied Creative Commons Licenses to their platforms in various fields such as culture,

art, scholarship, media, publication, and technology.

Downloadable version has been available online in many different languages, such as English,

French, Korean, Japanese, German, Polish, Portugese, or Spanish here.

Dunamu, a Korean App-book publisher, developed this precious collection into an iPad app. You can

7th Anniversary - 7-year-old CC Korea's Birthday Party

Last Wednesday, March 21, was the 7th anniversary of Creative Commons Korea.

CC Korea has organized a nice little birthday party to celebrate the time we have spent together to spread the idea of openness and the efforts of volunteers.

The party was held in Cafe Bamsamkinbyul at Hongik Univ. station.

We had a surprise guest from CC Phillipines, Berne and his wife Beth.

They visited Korea for vacation, and happened to hear about our anniversary party.

The dried mangoes they brought all the way from the Phillipines were so good. Yum!

They made the occasion even more special. Thanks to Berne and Beth once again!

Jay, our Project Lead, is speaking in this photo.

He mentioned how CC Korea started and how much he appreciates all the efforts of the volunteers.

Surely, he has devoted himself to raise the awareness in openness in different sectors of the society.

On the same date, 7 years ago, CCL was officially introduced to Korea for the first time. This was also the date that Creative Commons Korea was launched.

After all these years, CC Korea has achieved some noticeable fruits,

such as helping and encouraging people to open their contents and remember the real meaning of freedom.

However, the most precious asset we have now compared to 7 years ago would be our volunteers.

This would be the biggest difference between now and then, that we have the people who passionately love Creative Commons Korea.

They willingly gave up their time and dedicated to the value that we all believe together, open and share.

All the achievements we have made is built with our volunteers.

They've come to the party to wish a happy birthday to CC Korea, but in real, they are the ones who are our birthday wishes :)

We hope that CC Korea can continue celebrating the value of Creative Commons for 10 years, 20 years, for ever, with even bigger crowd.

Last week was Open Education Week. Many countries participated and celebrated to spread the awareness of open education and O.E.R. (Open Educational Resources)

Creative Commons is inevitably interested in open education movement because of their needs of open licenses to continue their activity. Believing in the possibility of openness and voluntary participation, O.E.R. and Creative Commons movement are very similar to one another.

Creative Commons Korea (CC Korea) has organized the first CC salon of 2012 focused on open education, called <Hello, World!>.

The Salon <Hello, World!> was held last Friday. The title has come from the speakers that CC Korea has brought to the audience, "Egoing"(@egoing) and Dr. Kyu-Tae Kim.

"Hello world" is a traditional collective habitual sentence that programmers use to test a new technology.

"Egoing," a volunteer tutor of computer program coding and Dr. Kyu-Tae Kim, a professor of Korea University School of Electrical Engineering and active participant of O.C.W. (Open Course Ware), are both techonological people who are interested in sharing knowledge based on open values.

Just like testing a new program, they are passionately trying a new way of teaching, saying hello to the new world of education. And many people are reacting to their attempts with great support as well.

Majority of the audience was not only Creative-Commons-related people but also existing students and followers of the speakers.

The Salon was run as in a talk show format. Stella Shin, a dedicated CC Korea volunteer, has hosted the show by asking questions to the speakers and actively listening to them. As a Ph.D candidate of Education major, Stella has reached to the points in an academic point of view. The atmosphere of the audience was like well-behaving students, enjoying the lecture and conversation and participated to question what they have been wondering.

"Egoing" presented his coding tutorial website "Life Coding" and how he engaged in teaching.

His beginning was similar to those existing famous volunteer tutors such as Salman Khan of Khan Academy, just because he wanted to hand the knowledge to people who need it.

Soon, he realized quite many people would be benefitted by the free tutorials, and he built up a series of web tutorials "Life Coding."

"Life Coding" is a free tutorial series for anyone who even do not have a background in programming.

"Egoing" is archieving the tutorial videos and material for computer coding language, and anyone can visit the website to begin his or her own learning schedule.

The facebook community for the "Life Coding" users have more than 1,600 members. They form groups among them to encourage each other to keep up with their study, help one another for problem solving, and discuss issues around the area and so on.

Recently, he also has initiated a new project called "Hyodo Coding." (Life Coding for Seniors) It is an archieve of tutorial videos for elderly users who are basically new to the world of Information Technology.

It kindly introduces how to use a computer, log on to the Internet, and utilize a mobile phone to play a game and many more.

He is now planning to extend the website to contain a larger project named "Life Expression," which teaches people how to express themselves in many different ways such as writing, singing, dancing, etc.

Dr. Kyu-Tae Kim is one of the pioneers of Korean O.C.W. movement.

He is a founder of e-Nanoschool, an online lecture hall for nano technology. Via e-Nanoschool, Kim opens his courses to anyone who wishes to listen to him. They are not necessarily his students from the same school only but open public.

As a result, this attempt is contributing to raise more high-quality human source in the nano techology sector.

He expected that open education can be an alternative for the segregation between classes in education.

Especially, O.C.W. can provide opportunities for many talented individual scattered all around the world and stimulate them to come to the actual Universities.

He emphasized that academic sectors can be also benefitted by opening the sources. Scholars can easily utilize the open sources for their studay and this brings quality increase and cost decrease in many studies and researches.

He explained why post-secondary education institutes are opening their courses, what kind of impact it might have, and how Korea is doing in this global movement more in detail throughout the talk show.

He also added how practically O.C.W. applies to the reality and what efforts people are making to work it to be even more applicable.

The Salon was carried live on the official CC Korea Twitter (@cckorea) with a hash tag #ccsalon. For the whole Salon, the crowd was inspired and uplifted by the speakers' enthusiasm. It made a wonderful chance to gather people who are interested in open education for the Open Education Week, and it was an honor for CC Korea as well. CC Korea is now looking forward to organize another Salon coming up in June, another great opportunity to bring people come together and discuss openness in Korean society.

World without disabilities – children’s picture books drawn on the iPad

There is a man who is usually called 'Kim-Tang' or 'Mr.Kim-Tang' in the cyberspace. People ask Kim, Tae-Hwang what he does. His answer is that he is a 'Culture Planner'. As a matter of fact, he doesn't like the expression either.

In 2008, he got a message from the Holt-Ilsan Center and he was asked to handle the rehab. program for the disabled residing in that center. "At that time, I was also selected for the education support program run by the Gyeonggi Provincial government. As a beginning, I started a photographic class with twelve people in the Holt-Ilsan Center. During a year, we studied together and took pictures. Furthermore, we made a short film. All the participants were fully satisfied and the program was pretty well received by people outside."

The photography class by Mr.Kim ranked on the top out of all the programs in the province in 2010. He was thinking to extend the program for another year, advised by the Gyeonggi provincial government, but he changed his mind. "Extending the same class for another year is meaningless to me as well as to my students. So, I decided to try creating e-books this time. I applied for financial support with the new idea and I got the chance again. I think I'm very lucky. I'm going to do the work even if I failed.”

At first, he started a drawing class and bought each one of them small sketchbooks. He did not concern about the money. He thought that the better the quality of the paper is, the more interest the students would have in the drawing class. Maybe thanks to the idea, there were positive responses far more than expected. Once a week, the two-hour class was too short to make them feel they couldn’t even afford to have a short break. Six months passed In that way.

"At that time, I had an iPad and sometimes I brought them to the class. The people who were not good at using a mouse were very good at using the touch-based tablet. So I installed a drawing application on it, and they drew great pictures. It was a wonderful experience for me."

There was no reason to have a complicated process. He divided the twelve people into two teams, and bought an iPad for each team. They were easily able to add layers, create characters and color them on the tablet. The process speed up.

“Sweet bath” and “Happy umbrella village” went out into the world like that. The disabled students from 20's to 50's drew stories and added their voices little by little. The process of creating a story was the most interesting part.

"The mentally disabled generally doesn't accept a fantasy. They learn how to distinguish whether a something actually exists or not during their lifetime. It is very important for them to make a clear distinction between true and false. Therefore, it is natural that they don't think any story with metaphor or fantasy makes sense at all. So, I focused on creating a story reflecting the real life of them."

“Sweet bath” is a children's story created despite these difficulties. It is a delightful and original story. "The village has a drought. The three children take a shower with the lime soda instead of the water. And then, they feel sticky." From this point, the students reflected their personal experiences in the Holt-Ilsan Center to the story. "A child who keeps ten dogs thought 'The lime soda is sweet, so the dogs will lick it.' The other child wipe the body with tissues, but it became worse and the child looked like a mummy because the tissues stick to the body on the contrary. However, the sun drank the cool soda, and it rained and stopped the long drought.

"Happy umbrella village" is as delightful and original as "Sweet bath" with warm-hearted sensibility. The name of the main character is 'Boksiri'. It is a real name of the dog that stays in the children's story class. Boksiri in the Umbrella village is delivering umbrellas to the village people. The people in the village can't live without umbrellas. Haengju in the wheelchair can stand up with an umbrella. Boknam who lives on the top of the hill can come down the hill with an umbrella.

One day, Boksiri was ill and he couldn't deliver umbrellas. The village people were at a loss. So, they went to the Donghyun's house where the umbrellas were piled up. By the way, they were hungry, because it was late at night. They cook and ate together. By doing that, there was a party everyday and all the people in the village became happy without umbrellas.

Mr.Kim Tae Hwang and the twelve students in the Holt-Ilsan Center showchased their own e-books at Junglebook Art Gallery last October. While doing that, they published an application in Apple AppStore, too. The two books have been released under Creative Commons License BY condition, so everyone can use and share them freely. If a person doesn't have an iPad, there is no problem to read them. On the PC, he or she can find 'Sweet bath' and 'Happy Umbrella Village' by accessing 'ISSUE' which is a digital publishing platform.

Mr.Ssink who collaborated with Mr. Kim for the class says the essential part of the class is not the results - the e-books they created - but the process itself. It seemed that the students enjoyed the class itself as they participated in. Through the three years’ experience, the students have naturally learned to decide who does what. Even there is a person who plays the role to watch and scold the people who was late for the class. The official class runs once a week for fifteen weeks, but when you consider the time for preparation and actual exhibition period, it is probably much longer.

For 2012, Mr.Kim is planning for a new class. This time, he's going to try 'Podcasting'. "There are a great many stories in the Holt-Ilsan Center. There’s a variety of lives in different ages. I will record their stories with their own voices. In other words, we're sort of potcasting the daily lives of the Holt-Ilsan Center. Potcasting can be a flexible communication tool and you can keep podcasts for a long time. What if my idea is not selected? Probably we're just going to do it ourselves anyway!

Now the Better Way to CCL Contents-Search Service for CC Licensed Contents Renewal

Film maker, art creator, writer, educator, and other creative workers need ‘available’, ‘legal’ contents as resource for their works. However, those contents needed are scattered throughout many hosting services and searched via various portal sites. Moreover, contents seekers have to select among differently distinct license options. For reducing this cost users has endured, CC Korea renewed former CCL contents search service, ‘Let’s CC(http://letscc.net/)’ for easier, faster searching.

*What is ‘Let’s CC ‘
Let’s CC is search service especially for CCL(Creative Commons Licence) applied web contents; visual image, music, motion pictures, film, documents. This service was developed with open API from Flickr, YouTube, CC Mixter, Jamendo and other contents hosting services.

Not only providing repository for CCL contents, Let’s CC fasten user’s search experience adding newly updated menus on it.

New Functions of Let’s CC

1. ‘License Choice’

At the front page of the search webpage, users insert a keyword on search box (English ones are more accessible now). In here, users can select CC licenses according to their purpose (commercial or noncommercial/ modify or not).

2. ‘Favorite’

After search engine showed various CCL contents matching user’s keywords and license option, users can check some of useful or remarkable contents as ‘starred; Favorites’. There starred contents can be used for future use with quick access via ‘My Favorites (on right head of front page)’.

3. ‘Most Featured’

If users starred contents, the contents are used as recommended contents reflecting its popularity. Then other users can see and pick the ‘most featured contents’ in their search results when they insert same or similar keywords of starred items for saving time and effort.

4. Contents Preview

Users can preview visual contents and take short-listen of audio contents before selecting details on contents provider’s webpage. For this, contents can be filtered and time loss for clicking is lessened

Serendipity x Creativity – “Art Happening: Serendipity Days”

September 22, 2011 – Creative Commons Korea presents a culture event titled “Art Happening: Serendipity Days” from October 18 to 23, 2011.

“Art Happening: Serendipity Days” is a cultural project to experiment an interaction between art and happenstance – imagining what interesting things can happen and turning that imagination into reality: Some see their personal stories inspire the creation of music; some others find their own personalities translated to animation characters; discarded drawings are displayed in an art exhibition; and photos are waiting to be found by random visitors at public libraries.
Creative Commons Korea organizes the event sponsored by several public bodies including the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism; the Ministry of Administration and Security; Korea Association of Information and Telecommunication; Korea Copyright Commission; and Green on Paper. Art Sonje also participates in as a partner.

Art Happening consists of four programs categorized by genre: photography, animation, contemporary music, and illustration. For photography, the participating nine professional photographers each provide 10 artworks for the exhibitions to be held in 10 public libraries in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. Visitors of the libraries will be pleased with a official public photo exhibition at the library or be able to look for photos hidden between pages of books. For those who are not able to visit the libraries in person or want more information, online photo exhibition will also be available at the website from October 11 to 31.

For the animation part, Hong Hak-soon, who won the grand prize at the Indie-Anifest with “Tittilibou Mr. Manding” in 2011, will premiere his latest work “Friends of the Whole Universe: The Beauty Salon with instinct.” He raised about 2,400,000 won from 57 people for this project by using a local crowdfunding service Tumblbug and created the characters featured in the animation inspired by some of the contributors, like their avatars. Names of all contributors are displayed on the film credit while special gifts including framed illustrations, DVD, original drawings, and T-shirts will be distributed as tokens of appreciation depending on the donation amount.

The music program is a collaboration of six composers. They asked people via social networking services to send photos capture their special memories and then the composers write music based on the photos and stories. This project is also funded through Tumblbug, which successfully raised 1,970,000 won from thirty individual sponsors.

For illustration, three illustrators presents a joint exhibition under the theme of “the Origin of its Birth” at Art Sonje center’s lounge. A number of study drawings thrown away by the artists will be open to the public, freely on the floor and walls of the lounge.

All the works produced for the festival “Art Happening: Serendipity Days” will be released under creative commons licenses selected by the authors. More details are available at its website

YEIZON is a small project which is built to prove that musicians can make their own music without worrying about financial needs. YEIZON wants to be the living role example of free musicians who are not imprisoned in the existing rules of the white collared music industry. After a long time of preparation, it is slowly getting ready to launch our project.

It aims to create an Open Collaboration system. All contents of YEIZON project will be released for ‘free’ at this site. Everyone is allowed to use and create their own work of art using all contents found at this site. A user can freely create his or her own music, video, artwork, and text contents. After the creation, a user uploads the stuff at Submit a post page. Uploaders of favorite artwork will be contacted by YEIZON members personally to discuss collaborating for the official YEIZON album.

YEIZON is running social media and SNS such as Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Vimeo and so on. Its members use Yammer to communicate with each other. To raise more participations, its web page provides three languages; Korean, English, and Japanese.

YEIZON uses CCL3.0(BY-NC-SA). It is possible to find the music arts of YEIZON project in ‘cc mixter’ web page, which is a community music remixing site featuring remixes and samples licensed under Creative Commons licenses.

One of YEIZON member says, “I can see the limit in the existing distribution channel for music. There is no other way but to distribute music through the given framework under the copyright. YEISON is the project to find the way to do what musicians want to do, to share the music with more people, and to get more participation together. I don't think that it's serious matter right now to make a lot of money. Our favorite music goes around by SNS, and someone can create it new, and the creation leads us to the fresh inpirations and art works. Isn't it clear that which is more valuable for us?”

CCK i-Phone App Release

CC Korea now available on smart phone!

On last month, August 11, CC Korea got our own mobile application for i-phone. This application is the thankful contribution from CCK’s volunteer, JongEun Lee(@yomybaby) as developer and producer. As a sincere volunteer of CCK, Lee has instructed “Creating mobile application from zero point to full”, an application making using Titanium tool in “CC study & create” project. This CCK app was also made with Titanium, which is cross-platform for app developers. The further great message is that Lee already shared whole developer’s source used to make this i-phone app.

Here are the features of CCK i-phone app:

-“Share” the app through Twitter and E-mail with friends

-“Mark Favorite” and “Save for offline” to read details about CC case study in Korea

-“Zoon in/out” for better text reading, like e-book

And now, volunteer Lee has been running to launch a version of CCK app for Android OS smart phones.
